One Book One Calgary Program: Hidden Stories

Postby Carolyn Ryder » Wed Nov 13, 2013 5:53 pm

Throughout November, Calgary Public Library is hosting our fourth annual One Book, One Calgary event, a city-wide library initiative designed to ignite community dialogue and enrich community connections through a shared reading experience.

We're pleased to announce that The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill is this year's One Book, One Calgary selection. Published in 2007, this award-winning novel is fast becoming a Canadian classic. It has been nominated as a One Book, One Calgary contender several times by the community and by Calgary Public Library staff.

Extremely well-researched and written, The Book of Negroes invites readers to explore a chapter in Canadian history through the life of a fictional character's life caught up in the transatlantic slave trade. Learn more about this compelling book and join us in November for programs that explore the rich themes of this best-selling book of fiction.

In particular, you may be interested in the following program:

Hidden Stories: Alberta’s Black Heritage
Join distinguished authors Bruce Shepard and Cheryl Foggo in this exploration of historical and personal history, chronicling the struggles and triumphs of Black pioneers making new homes on the Canadian Plains
Bruce Shepard is a distinguished author and museum curator from Medicine hat who is doing a presentation based on his book, Deemed Unsuitable, on the history of Blacks who came to Alberta from Oklahoma. Noted author, poet, and screenwriter Cheryl Foggo has done extensive research on her family history in Amber Valley, an early Black settlement in Alberta.
