Part of this week's Historic Calgary Week is a talk on one of the buildings we're watching, the Barron Building:
The Exciting Life and Times of JB Barron and the Barron Building
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Thursday, August 1, 2013
Temple B'Nai Tikvah
900 - 47 Avenue SW
In the 1920s and 30s, lawyer and theatre impresario JB Barron brought Sergei Rachmaninoff and other musical greats to Calgary infusing color and culture into a depressed city. In 1947, when oil was discovered at Leduc, JB observed that virtually no office space existed. He risked his life savings building the Barron Building and Uptown Theatre, his greatest contribution to the prairie city. Writer Irena Karshenbaum shares why this important site is so valuable to Calgary's history.
