On December 27 2011 James Andrew Mackie, Q.C. passed away at the age of 84. A former president of the Historical Society of Alberta (among many other roles and accomplishments), James put his money where his mouth was, with an award-winning, historically sensitive renovation the family-owned Lancaster building in 1978, when the adjacent TD Square was developed. (James A. was a decendant of pioneer Calgary businessman and civic leader James Stuart Mackie, who built the Lancaster.) David Neill recalls that James initiated efforts to see Stephen Avenue recognized as a National Heritage District.
