Old Macleod Trail Marking Project

Postby newsposter » Wed Sep 25, 2013 9:36 am

A volunteer group let by Bill Dunn has been finding traces, 130-year old wagon ruts, of the original Macleod Trail. The trail was part of the supply route from Fort Benton, Montana to Fort Calgary and places in between, when southern Alberta was pioneered in the late 1800s. Below are some links to news stories from the towns south of Calgary. From Fort Macleod northward there are 15 markers dating to the 1980 and earlier that are being refurbished. Two new ones have been placed in Okotoks and DeWinton. Project leader Bill Dunn spoke on the subject during the most recent Historic Calgary Week.

Bill Dunn speaks to the CBC Eyeopener, November 18, 2013, on the Old Macleod Trail marking project. Wagon-wheel inspired signs mark spots where 19th century wagon ruts are still visible from the original trail that ran between Calgary, Fort Macleod and Fort Benton, Montana. The latest sign will be placed in spring 2014 near where Macleod Trail crosses Pine Creek at the south end of Calgary.
