The Calgary Sun, Calgary, AB - 16/05
Calgary city council has approved the Beltline Area Redevelopment Plan that offers density bonuses for heritage preservation. The density bonus system will allow developers who preserve Beltline heritage to transfer or sell an old structure's density rights to a new building. It means a developer hoping to add height or floor space to a new condo tower can grow taller by simply buying and protecting a heritage building, with a promise never to knock it down. "The plan will be the toast of history-loving Calgarians. It's really significant - it's the first time it's happened in Calgary. It's the first community that has agreed to a density bonus for heritage," said Ald. Madeleine King.
