Excerpt from David Parker, July 1, 2011 Calgary Herald "Three Streams flow into bigger space:

...Last January Witold Twardowski opened Sociale Bar & Grill in the lower level of the Lougheed Building. This week he opened another venue -right next door in the Grand Theatre building.

The experienced designer has taken over the ground and second floor space in theatre's foyer area previously known as Velvet and with the help of Hribar Design Group has reworked the decor into a much lighter, welcoming space.

UBU Theatre Lounge is the new name -chosen with the help of Theatre Junction after UBU Roi, a legendary French play that premiered in 1896 -but it will serve Asian avantgarde food prepared by partner and master sushi Chef Tomo Mitsung, who opened Twardowski's Wild Orchid Asian Bistro in Canmore.

It now features another bar area on the main floor, raised upholstered booths and new lighting -and Sapporo on tap. And Twardowski is taking over more of a presence on 1st Street S.W. shortly when he opens a Calgary Wild Orchid in the adjoin space that many of us still remember as Don's Hobby Shop, that will offer Asian tapas and takeout...

New eatery's decor a nod to history
By David Parker, Calgary Herald January 7, 2011
excerpt:

...When the Lougheed Building was opened 100 years ago the Sociale space, next to the Grand that boasted being the largest theatre west of Toronto of its day, was home to Cronn's Rathskeller. A photograph published in Donald Smith's Calgary's Grand Story of Cronn's shows how true to the original look Sociale is in the lower level, from the historical elements of the oak corniced ceiling to the terrazzo floor.

The stairwell leads into 6,800 square feet of speakeasy chic space. A big difference is that Sociale has no chairs but rather is furnished with high-end -- Twardowski says $400 each -- comfortable bar stools at hi-top tables. And there are three bars and a brand new large open kitchen that all make good use of the original marble rescued from throughout the Lougheed Building...

... I look forward to an announcement of a new restaurant opening on the main floor of 8th Avenue Place as well as a new tenant in the existing Henry VIII pub on the mall and a corporate bar and grill to open in the lower level of the Lougheed Building. When the building opened the same space was home to Kronn's Rasthkeller, a well frequented tavern with a wonderful domed ceiling, oak cornices and terrazzo floor; hopefully the new restaurant will carry some of its 100 year-old charm.

Before the building restoration, this location was the Penguin Pub.

The building, at the corner of 6th Avenue and 1st Street SW, was nearly demolished in 2003 but was restored instead.

Allied Properties REIT announced Wednesday it is buying the 98-year-old building, noting it is fully leased to tenants that match the quality it looks for.

Allied said the sale is expected to close in October.

Restoration of the Lougheed Building by Heritage Property Corp. began seven years ago. The new building was unveiled to the public in 2008.

The building was originally constructed by Senator James Lougheed in 1912.

Allied Properties REIT own and manage a portfolio of mainly Class I office properties in the urban areas of Toronto, Montréal, Winnipeg, Québec City and Kitchener-Waterloo.

Class I office properties are created through the redevelopment of light-industrial structures in urban areas. This involves comprehensive renovation of the buildings, as well as re-leasing to office tenants.

Culinary classics celebrate the past at ParkerHouse
John Gilchrist, For The Calgary Herald
Published: Sunday, November 02, 2008

... ParkerHouse is part of CA Restaurant Enterprises, the folks who brought us The Tribune and the three Murrieta's. They took the lease on the renewed Lougheed Building space and dropped $3.8 million into it. That bought them tall Tiger Mahogany walls, Brazilian cherry wood floors, art-decoish Italian tiles and four hand-blown glass chandeliers from GH Studios in Strathmore.

Add in about 220 leather chairs spread over two levels, plus a 50-seat private room, and the result is a large and beautiful room. The look was developed by Frank Kaspar of Abugov-Kaspar in conjunction with Ron Salverda and his team at CA Restaurants.

The room parallels 6th Avenue, allowing natural light throughout and a view of passing traffic. That view has been partly shuttered, creating a feeling of privacy while maintaining a sense of the urban environment outside. In some ways, it looks like it has been there since the Lougheed Building opened in 1912, but aside from a small amount of floor tile at the entrance, it's all new...

The restored facade of the Lougheed Building looks great but now that Good Earth has moved into the main floor of 6th Avenue and 1st Street S.W. it is getting to be a bustling corner of downtown again.

Good Earth Coffee House and Bakery has leased 1,500 square feet in the Heritage building and has fitted its space out to complement its historic surroundings with Italian marble table tops and counter, older designed suspended lighting and reproductions photos of old Calgary. It will seat 40 and is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays until spring time.

President and co-founder Michael Going says this is his 12th shop in Calgary and he has opened one in Red Deer and another in Edmonton. By mid-2008 he plans to open in Okotoks, another in Edmonton and his first B.C. location will be serving Kelowna.

Connie Chan, Good Earth's director of marketing, says the Lougheed Building shop is selling Nicaraguan Los Milagros coffee. But it won't last long as the company could only get 200 pounds of the Cup of Excellence award winner from the small amount available for auction. Premier quality and very rare, the coffee was grown by a small farmer on his five-hectare plantation. Hurry down.
