Glenbow layoffs

Stories from 2009 and 2012

Unfortunate news from the Glenbow Museum, where according to FFWD the archives section has been especially hard-hit by layoffs (see stories linked below). The Glenbow Archives is an invaluable resource for people researching heritage buildings and other aspects of our history for tours, stories, preservation efforts, etc. CHI and friends are big users.

Newsposter hears that three valued members of the Glenbow archives staff were laid off (among others), which cuts deep into a service very much valued and needed by those of us who try to preserve heritage.

Here is a timely article in the Calgary Real Estate News about the value of the archives, from November 19, 2009:

David Finch article on the loss of Glenbow Archive staff. Also see above.
Calgary Herald, March 28, 2010

"When experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual," wrote philosopher George Santayana in The Life of Reason, Volume 1, 1905.
So why did the Glenbow Archives let go half its archivists recently? Budget problems, of course, but we forget the past at our peril...

Sorry to be adding to this thread... At the end of 2009 there were layoffs at the Glenbow that impacted the archives particularly, and were of great concern to the heritage community. See above for those stories. Here we are in the summer of 2012, and more news of layoffs at the museum.
