Happy 100th birthday, City Hall
By Brenda Etherington, Calgary Herald June 26, 2011
What a day it must have been on June 26, 1911, when the Hon. Robert Borden officially opened Calgary City Hall.
The building was finished at twice the estimated cost of $142,000. It was intended to be fireproof, with a steel framework and reinforced concrete, which dates it as the earliest building known of steel frame construction in the city.
The huge cost overrun delayed construction, which meant the building took four years to complete.
Imagine the number of people who have roamed these venerable halls -38 mayors, numerous aldermen, royalty, thousands of civil servants and many citizens.
This impressive building with its awesome clock tower is truly a Calgary treasure.
Many happy returns, City Hall!
