For an extensive interview with John Snow, please see the interview between John Snow and the late curator Mark Joslin on Nancy Townshend's website: www.nancytownshend.ca

FYI, Snow was a friend and associate of artist and architect Maxwell Bates, who designed the studio at the back of the house. Bates is responsible for St. Mary's Cathedral and Sacred Heart Church mentioned elsewhere on this site. More about Bates:

John Snow House Update

Postby Johanna at TNG » Tue Feb 09, 2010 5:01 pm

Just a quick update concerning the John Snow Residence: The New Gallery (TNG) has applied to have the property rezoned to a direct control district. We're expecting to know the outcome in June of 2010. If we're successful, we plan to use the space as our Resource Centre (a combined library and archive), and as the home base for our proposed artist-in-residence program. Artists would temporarily live in the house, creating work and conducting workshops.

If we're unsuccessful, the house will remain the responsibility of the owner. I'm not sure what the owner would do with it, although I imagine it would become a rental property.

We're optimistic about our chances, and while we wait, we've been looking into funds for further rehabilitation. I'll keep you updated!

Cheers,

Johanna

The redesignation of the John Snow house for New Gallery uses goes to CPC on April 1 with an "approve" recommendation from City Administration. Then to a public hearing of City Council later in the spring. The house has provincial designation and will be protected.

Hi again,

Another update: we have our hearing before City Council on June 7, 2010, at 9:30 am in the Council Chamber. While we are confident about our application, we would still love your support. You can attend the hearing, or send a letter of support to the City Clerk by Thursday, May 27, 2010, at 10 am. Submissions may be hand delivered, mailed, faxed to 403-268-2362 or emailed to cityclerk@calgary.ca.

Helping to preserve the John Snow house

Postby cjane » Wed May 19, 2010 9:58 am

And you may also wish to check out the article in today's Calgary Herald:

http://communities.canada.com/calgaryhe ... fault.aspx

A house in Lower Mount Royal that was home to artist John Snow and his wife Kay for many years has been offered to The New Gallery, Calgary's oldest artist-run centre, for use as a Community Resource Centre, a library, archive and space for collaborations on cultural projects. Before this can go ahead, however, the arrangement needs the approval of City Council. The last step of this long process is a public hearing on June 7... Read full story at link above

Successful rezoning of John Snow House

Postby Johanna at TNG » Mon Jun 07, 2010 2:18 pm

I am pleased to announce the successful rezoning of John Snow House. The New Gallery will now move forward with its plans to open a Resource Centre (a combined library and archive) in the space. We also plan to host a few special events in the house, and I hope you'll be able to join us. One of the things that I'm most excited about is a potential collaboration with New Works Calgary, a non-profit music society that commissions contemporary concert music. New Works was co-founded by John Snow, and I think it would most fitting to be able to hold a small concert in the space.

I'd also like to thank you for your support. We couldn't have done it without you!

PS - we don't have an opening date yet, but we're aiming for sometime in the fall. I do hope you'll be able to drop by and see the space.
