This thread most recently updated September 2010 - see last posting...

City is considering buying and demolishing this building. Why not save it and move it back from the road? One of the older buildings on the north hill? See story below the photo. Also a letter from a citizen in the next posting.

Violin shop faces swan song - Store site targeted for 16th Avenue sidewalk project
Sean Myers, Calgary Herald, Published: Tuesday, November 13, 2007

A unique store that has specialized in handmade violins for clients around the world for more than 20 years may be torn down to make way for a wider sidewalk and a row of trees. W.A. Gough Violins, at 120 16th Ave. N.W., is in the way of efforts to turn a portion of the Trans-Canada Highway into a pedestrian-friendly boulevard...

Letter to the Editor

City is destroying its own soul piece by piece

Calgary Herald

Gough - Re: "Violin shop faces swan song," Nov. 13.

I am a longtime faithful client of Al Gough, who runs the magical, illustrious violin shop on 16th Avenue N.W.

Many a day over the years, I've taken young children and teenagers to see Gough. It's always an adventure to spend time in the shop.

We have never been concerned as pedestrians that this location is a "pinch point."

What is the city going to do when someone in a public consultation points out that we've lost our soul by eliminating places like this violin shop that give us significance? Remove the sterile concrete pedestrian corridor and try to get it back.

Here is a happy follow-up story on this old 2007 thread about the WA Gough Violin building and business on 16th Avenue.

Craftsman in fine tune: Calgary violin shop making music again
By Ted Rhodes, Calgary Herald September 19, 2010

CALGARY -- Violins of all manner line the dusty shelves of the 16th Avenue store. Cases are stacked in corners and tools litter the multiple workbenches in alcoves scattered throughout. Stepping into the W.A. Gough Violinmaker & Restorer shop is like stepping inside the soul of the instrument. And despite an earlier plan to tear it down, the historic building and its wares will remain on site for a good while longer...
