Saving King Eddy hits right note

Calgary Herald Editorial

Sunday, May 25, 2008

May the music live on at the King Edward Hotel. And it will, now that Cantos Music Foundation has won the city's bid to revive the historic working-class hotel of the early 20th century. The victory is one for all Calgarians to cherish and celebrate.

Not only does it save a significant piece of Calgary's heritage, but it turns the lights back on after many years of darkness and silence at the city's once-famous home of the blues.

During its heyday as a blues bar, the 1905 hotel was known throughout North America as a favourite haunt among many of the continent's most talented musicians. Some would fly in almost every weekend to play in the open jam sessions every Sunday.

If the walls could talk, they would probably tell the story of how Bryan Adams once took the stage and played for three hours as part of a Molson beer contest. He could have chosen any venue for the performance, yet, it was Calgary's King Eddy that captured his heart. Word has it, Adams' manager had to drag him off the stage because the Canadian rocker wouldn't stop rocking.

More magical moments are ahead for the King Eddy, thanks to Cantos, a worthy recipient of the winning bid and one of the city's best-kept secrets. (Among its world-class collection of instruments is a piano once used by the iconic song-writing duo of Elton John and Bernie Taupin.)

The hotel may be an understated, non-descript building on the outside, but its inside is filled with memories of a colourful history. The city deserves praise for shifting its attitude about heritage and saving a building, which until recently would have been destined for the wrecking ball. And Cantos deserves the best of well wishes in its attempt to breathe new life into the King Eddy, and the blighted East Village neighbourhood where it sits.

We have been plenty patient for many years in waiting to see anything concrete happening in the redevelopment of East Village. Although the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation says it is on schedule with work on underground utilities, realigning Riverfront Avenue and designing the 4th Street underpass, it's still a problem for many to have faith that the area behind city hall will one day be transformed into a downtown treasure.

We need to be fed with positive news, so I was delighted to tour the Cantos Music Foundation last week not only to enjoy the collection of musical instruments but also to discuss its plans for acquiring the King Eddy building in East Village.

Executive director Andrew Mosker and his board intend to recreate the former renowned blues bar into a world-class music showcase.

The facade and sign stay and it will continue to be a live music venue with restaurant and bar but will feature musical talent of all styles, including blues but also classical, jazz, ethnic and rock. Plans are also in the works for a 250-seat flexible space for special events, economically accessible for community groups. Within its 70,000 square feet there will be a gift shop of unique music memorabilia and instruments as well as recordings made at its in-house recording studio.

Central attraction, of course, will be the incredible collection that is displayed today at the Cantos museum at 134 11th Ave. S.E.

The collection of unique keyboard and electronic instruments, recording equipment and Alberta music memorabilia is indeed world-class. They range from a 1560 keyboard to the circa-1924 Kimball theatre organ, Elton John's historic songwriting piano, and the first successful electronic musical instrument created by Leon Theremin, which is played by waving one's hands around two antennas.

Today there are approximately 700 items, the largest number of working instruments in the world including the first 10 pianos made in North America and one of the keyboard-controlled analogue synthesizers used to score the soundtrack to Francis Ford Coppola's epic film Apocalypse Now -- a hoot!

The foundation was created in January 2003, from the integration of TriumphEnt Foundation, which was centred around the international organ festival and Cantos Music Museum, founded in 1997.

The museum officially opened to the public by appointment only in 1998 and for drop-in guided tours since 2004. Many children have participated in its MusicMatters program and Cantos à la Carte Silent Movie Mondays have been popular annual events. But there has been little other promotion to date, although more than 200 community events are held in the building.

The foundation has in its collection the Rolling Stones Mobile Recording Studio, which will become a functioning recording studio and interactive exhibit in the new location.

Mosker expects the new facility -- a national music centre in the making -- will attract between 80,000 and 120,000 annual visitors, bringing a whole new life to East Village.

It begins with a free outdoor awareness concert outside the King Eddy on Oct. 16 -- watch for more details.

National Music Centre at the King Eddy Design Entries on Public Display

September 1, 2009, Calgary, AB – After a wildly successful sold-out public presentation of five competing designs for its national music centre at the King Eddy project, Cantos Music Foundation has put the entries on public display at Bankers Hall, then Bow Valley Square throughout September.

“The public interest in our design competition has been phenomenal,” says Andrew Mosker, Cantos’ executive director. “We felt as many Calgarians as possible should be able to see what our competing architects have submitted – and this was a great way to do it.”

Designs from five world-renowned architects will be on display at from 11:45 until 2:00 at Bankers Hall from August 31 until September 4 and at Bow Valley Square from September 14-18, 2009. Cantos staff will be on hand to answer questions about the national music centre project and the foundation.

Comments about the designs can be made on the Cantos website and the board of directors will announce the winner on September 23, 2009.

The national music centre project vision is to create a 17-hour-a-day, seven-days-a-week hub for music including a live music venue, recording studios, collections, artist-in-residence programs, radio broadcasting, educational programs, emerging artist development and more.

King Eddy winning design unveiled - the Allied-BKDI bid. By some accounts, this was the design that highlighted the historic building the best. Congrats to all involved.

excerpt:
Ald. Ric. McIver, who heads the Community and Protective Services committee, said he voted to approve the grant because the project will help protect the King Eddy — built in 1905 and closed in 2004 — and offer a new world-class attraction. “If we spend this $25 million, we will get a new world-class tourist attraction for the city,” said McIver. “It’s a respectful way to treat our history; we need to protect our heritage.”
