Here in Calgary, we have former Ald. John Ayer to thank for fighting to keep a precious piece of this city's history from falling into the oblivion of that "amnesia bin." Ayer, who passed away May 6, fought to save the site of Fort Calgary, where this city literally began as a North West Mounted Police outpost, from being turned into the path of a freeway. He started researching the site's history in 1967 and the land was purchased by the city in 1974, just in time for the 100th anniversary of the founding of Fort Calgary. This is the site that Cecil Denny, who cofounded the town, said was "an enchanting spot . . . the most beautiful we had seen since our arrival in the West."
